I say "Go For It." Why bother going to the moon when we could can that project and head straight to Mars instead. What we need to do is make a mobile Space Station. Take the ISS, strap some rockets on to it, load it with supplies and turn that fucker into the U.S.S. Enterprise. Boldly go where no man has gone before.
